fake sympathy

Hi/salam aleikum/ your preferred greeting(lol)

Warning: If you get easily offended  by this kind of stuff then leave.Or read. Or do whatever you want to do.

So, I’m sure most people are aware of this, but without getting into specifics there was a Terror attack yesterday( the 22nd of May)  in Manchester,England.

Que all the “Pray for Manchester” social media posts, the hashtags, the sudden change of profile pictures to the English flag.

Now there’s nothing wrong with expressing sympathy or condolences. Having empathy is a good thing.

However, I think there is a degree of hypocrisy when it comes to all of this. We were all so quick to change our profile pictures to the French flag after the Paris attack, or the German flag after the Berlin attack.

So where were we when the nightclub shooting in Istanbul happened? Regardless as to how you feel about nightclubs or that kind of lifestyle, the death or  severe injury of another human being is a terrible thing, right? Where are  we now when innocent Palesinians are getting killed, or bombed or any terrible thing that occurs in Palestine? What are we doing now about the starvation/famine in Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan, Yemen or any other part of the world? The list could go on and on.

Thus we change our profile pictures or post a tweet with the hashtag pray for so and so yet when it comes to other countries, mainly not in Europe or any other “western” place we don’t care.

We don’t. It’s a simple fact. Yes there will be individuals who do care, however the majority don’t.

Now i am not saying these attacks on western countries do not matter or anything related to that. A terror attack is terrible regardless of who it affects, just because it is in the west does not make it less horrific.

The whole world gets affected by these kind of events. Not just Europe, or the U.S or Canada.

So pray for the whole world, not just Paris or Berlin or wherever.

Diversity in YA books

Hi/salam aleikum/whatever greeting you want to use.

So as an avid reader, one thing that i have noticed in YA books is the lack of diversity when it comes to race.

Look at pretty much any major book series, and you will see that pretty much all the main characters are in fact caucasian,  look at the Hunger games, the heroine Katniss Everdeen  is caucasian. Same goes for Twilight, i’m pretty sure Bella Swan is very much caucasian as well, Harry Potter? He’s caucasian. Of course there’s non caucasian characters in books too, but a lot of the time they aren’t main characters.

Now just to clarify, I have no problem with caucasian people, or book characters etc.

However, it would be great to see some non caucasian book characters, because, well, representation matters.

Do you agree or disagree? Tell me your opinion in the comments below!
